The Particularities Of The

Northern & Southern

Comparing Amboro National Park Northern & Southern

There are two main destinations in Amboro national park; Northern side and southern side.

Amboro National park North Side

The north side of the park is more Amazonian jungle and you can go deeper inside the park. The trekking is on the trails and without trails under the jungle or following some streams (always with a guide). At the north side of Amboro park there are more rivers, streams and with the standard price of a tour you get a private Spanish speaking guide, it is also possible to hire a private translator from us.

Overnight camping (Tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad) camping gear is included in the standard price. If you take a tour of 2 Days 1 Night, 3 DD 2 NN or longer it would be possible to stay overnight more inside the jungle. You would need to carry the camping gear, your bottles of water (Also included in the standard tour price) so we recommend you to bring a big backpack to put everything inside and to have your hands free.

The landscape at the north side of Amboro is not flat and presents some hills and mountains and the trails where the roots of the plants are everywhere, sometimes you would have to cross streams stepping on slippery stones.

The main village to enter Amboro National park north side could be BuenaVista.

Amboro National Park South side

The main entrance for the south side is at Refugio Volcanes. If your departure point is the city of Santa Cruj, it would be about 2 hours away and 1.5 hours before reaching the town of Samaipata, so there is no need to get or to go through Samaipata to reach Amboro National park.

Refugio Volcanes is a private property located in the first part of Amboro national park. At this place there is a nice lodge with clean rooms to stay overnight. The standard tour does not include a private guide but it does include a Spanish speaking companion that walks with you at the trails. At Refugio Volcanes you may need to talk to the manager to get yourself into a group and arrange the trekking, although they should be looking for your to get you in a group.

At Refugio Los Volcanes most of the trails are in the mountains so most of the time the trekking is very steep.

Nowadays there have been some complaints about the presence of the owner’s dogs and horses at the trails in the forest.

The trekking with the COMPANIONS is on the trails of Refugiio Los Volcanes, you would need to hire (From Amboro Tours) a private guide to get more advantage of your time / explore new trails at this beautiful part of the park.

Comparing Amboro National Park, Madidi National And Park Noel Kempf Mercado National Park

Comparing the most representative parts of the vegetation and topography of the northern part of Amboro National Park with the jungles in Madidi N Park, there is great similarity.

Compering the Amazonian of Noel Kempff National Park to the Amazonian of Amboro Park’s north side, Amboro NP is much has more rivers and streams

What catches the attention of visitors who appreciate these places is the quality of the forest and the diversity typical of this primary forest zone.

Regarding birds, Amboro National Park contains, according to studies, more bird species than the entire country of Costa Rica. Birds in the jungle are easy to hear but difficult to see due to the density of the forest.

In mammals, this part of Amboro is rich as it contains all the species typical of the Amazon, although is hard to see big mammas in Amboro NP or Noel Kempf NP

A brief Program to visit Amboro National Park North Side

This program / itinerary is a brief explanation of the activities of 1,2,3 days or more in Amboro National park Noth side

1st day.- These tours to Amboro Park North Side, usually start at 8:00 a.m. in the city of Santa Cruz. If it's from Buena Vista, it would be around 9:30 a.m. - If it's from Santa Cruz, the first part of this journey lasts approximately 1.5 hours (100 km) to Buena Vista, a nearby village to Amboró National Park. In this village, we meet the coordinator of Amboro Tours and a local guide.

In Buena Vista, we switch to a 4x4 vehicle to continue along the road or a dirt road. This whole second part of the tour can last about 1 hour or 1.5 hours, totaling approximately 45 km. During this time, we must cross rivers and/or streams and at the same time the communities around the core of the park.

During the rainy season, if it has rained too much and the level of the river(s) is too high, or the bottom of the river is too soft, we may have to walk or use other means to cross the rivers or streams that are necessary to reach the camp or cabins.

Please note that if you have not hired a porter (someone to carry your backpack or belongings), you must carry yourself, your own backpack, camping equipment, water bottles, and all your belongings, from the car to to the cabins or campsite, this is the reason we ask to have a big backpack (tour of 2 days or more) or a Small back (Tours of 1D.&1N). The distance is usually about 500 meters, but if the car does not get all the way to the end of the road the distance can be farther. Please do not bring suitcases to the jungle, because the car doe not get all the way to the camping site.

From the camping site you may hike in the trails with a small backpack, water bottles and a torch.

After lunch, you can leave your large backpack to start hiking through the trails in the Amazon rainforest. It is possible to take a small backpack. Be sure to always carry your most valuable items with you, as well as water bottles and a flashlight. Whether your program includes overnight stays in cabins or tents/camping.

All hikes/trekking can be coordinated with the guide and will take place depending on the physical condition of the participants, available time, and weather conditions.

Note: Tours to the northern part of Amboro National Park consist of hiking or trekking on sometimes on stones or slippery parts, many plant roots, and possible holes.

The natural pools can be deep. So it is necessary to be in good physical condition and not to go into the water if you cannot swim, as well as not to venture alone on the trails.

The trails after the ”Linea Roja” of the park in the jungle are in the part of the park without human settlements. If you took the 1day & 0 night tour and you have arrived at these trails without delays, you will have time for a hike of approximately 3.5 hours in the Amazon rainforest, and you would be back in the city of Santa Cruz around 19H.

If your tour is 2 days & 1 night, the trekking on the first day can be approximately 3 or 4 hours plus a short night safari walking on the trails (Always with the guide). This trek is also in the Amazon rainforest. (At night, if there is no moonlight or artificial light, the trails and all the places you see are dark). During the night hike, if you pay attention, you can feel different scents of flowers/plants than during the day. Some animals choose the night to come out, so you may have more chances to see some wild animals, although it must be clear that it is very, very likely that no mammals will be seen/found. A headlamp and/or a handheld flashlight are required.

2nd day.- Usually, in tours of 2 days or more, it is possible to have an early trek of 2 hours before breakfast… and another longer walk after breakfast. The walks can be on different trails.

In 2-day tours with 1 overnight stay, lunch must be taken at the campsite to be close to the starting point.

3rd day.- When tours to Amboro National Park are 3 days 2 nights or more days, the day or days between the first and last day are used to explore further into the northern side of Amboro National Park. Even on tours of 3 days or more, there are days when you do not return to the campsite to prepare lunch. End of this tour to Amboro Park North Side.

When it is necessary or required to camp in the jungle, and the chances of rain are high, sufficient plastic is necessary to prevent water from entering the tent/campsite.

On the last day of these tours through Amboró National Park, the hike back to the vehicle is after lunch around 3:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. Arrival in Santa Cruz is approximately at 7:30 p.m.

Please read the terms and conditions of our services.

Itineraries

Amboro Park North Side

From The City of Santa Cruz  (2 Days 1 Night)
1st Day

At  8H00 A.M. we pass by your hotel to pick you up and commence this two days one night, Amboro Park North Side Tour, travelling in a vehicle to a small town near to Amboro National Park. This trip is on a paved road with direction northwest  from the city of Santa Cruz.

The first part of  driving is of approximately 100 or 120 km. It depends on which part in the north side of the park we are driving to. Once on the highway although  we drive through  several small towns we do not stop until we get to  the small town near Amboro N park.

During the about 100 km of driving we go through Warnes just 23 kilometres from Santa Cruz. This town is known for the number of industries within its limits  including Viru Viru, the most important airport of Bolivia.

The next population on our way is Montero. It is the biggest city near to Santa Cruz.On the sides of the highway we can see sugar plantation. Montero has the largest Sugar Industry in Bolivia.

Continuing our route we reach Portachuelo a small town  known to be inhabited by mostly native people of the region. and its good looking  women. Also this population is known to produced exquisite pork sausages and local bread.

Sometimes, on the way the vehicle that is transporting us needs to stop to refill gas. In Bolivia the gas is a lot cheaper than the gasoline or diesel, but the tank has no much capacity. In that case everyone needs to get off the vehicle for this operation. It is good opportunity to use the toilets.

Once back on the highway far on the left side horizon,  we can  can appreciate the mountains of our destination, Amboro National park, a nature reserve of Amazon-jungle with  over half a million hectares,  which act as a magnet to attract rains.

After about 2 hours in the car we should  arrive to  the village near Amboro National park. In this town we usually switch vehicles and  meet the rest of the team, the local guide and the driver. Amboro park on the North side has five main entry points. These are; Mataracu, La Chonta, Macuñucu, Saguayo and Ichilo.

The part of the park where the communities are is called ANMI Area Natural de Manejo Integrado)

During the raining season, we may have to cross the river walking and continue on a cart o riding a horse.

In dry season starting in March or April through November the 4WD vehicle crosses the rivers and we can drive through the communities for about 11 or 18 km (It depends on the entry point), to reach the second border of Amboro N park.

After crossing the river we start going through the communities of Amboro park to reach the “Red Line” (Second border).

The Red Line is a  path opened with  machetes, in parts it is visible to the naked eye. The red line or “Linea Roja”, separates the communities from the central part of the park. After this line  is prohibited human settlements and / or any activity or means that harm the nature.

The exact point where the vehicle/cart/horses arrives will depend on road conditions at the time of the trip, which may vary due the season or to weather and other last minute factors. The 4WD or the  cart  sometimes  does not cross all the rivers on the way to the cabins or to the camping site. In this case we have to cross the others rivers walking or in a canoe.

When this happens  we also may have to walk about 2 or 6 km to get to the camping site or to the cabins in the jungle.

Once in the cabins or camping site, we may have our first lunch.

The cabins have two options one is with the  bathroom inside, and the other with the bathroom outside.

These cabins are very rustic  with the showers and toilets outside.

From the cabins or camping site , there are usually, paths (without signs), in the forest where it is  possible to trek  a long the trails in a great circuit that includes, more than one wonder, for people that  can appreciate this environment.

Some  trails generally go to view points, rivers, natural pools  or streams and other beautiful spots  in this Bolivian Amazon. It is usually possible to swim in these places.

On the first day the trekking in the trails into the jungle, may last 3 or 4 hours. This will depend on your physical conditions, the weather and the time available.

During all the tour we will be assisted by a guide who will explain about the lush vegetation and wildlife of the park. Visitor´s  questions about this environment are welcome.

Despite the two-days  trip to Amboro park is still short, taking into account the time needed to arrive and leave, it is possible to get an overview of what this natural reserve is.

Although it is clear that Amboro Tours do not guarantee at any time, the observation of any trace or the sighting of any animal, the possibilities exist. If we are “lucky” we may see more than one specie of monkey or even a jaguar.

To experience this very special environment we need to be with the utmost silence and peace of mind possible so we can have our main´s senses alerts such as the Sound, Smell and Sight.

Three days is a good numbers of days to visit the park. That is if you do not mind the uncomfortable of the jungle. And it should not be a problem for a visitor that appreciate the Amazonian or do not have trouble getting so close in contact with nature, which may also involve, ticks, mosquitoes and other insects. The presence of these insects depends on the place you go and the time of the year

Depending upon the entrance, there are circuits to waterfalls , natural pools in the jungle. The only way to get to these places is trekking. This impenetrable greenery seems never to end.

Where there are no hiking trails we use the streams. The type of hikes are usually within the red line. And almost always vary depending on the entry point we have chosen to enter . As this is a standard itinerary we do not specify with precision the trails.

In order to visit this place you need to be in a good physical conditions.

After this wonderful and unforgettable experience, we will walk back to the place where we left our vehicle in order to return to the city of Santa Cruz at about 19 Hours.

End of the tour to Amboro Park North Side.

Amboro National Park, is a large wilderness of one and a half million acres that straddles the eastern foothills of the Andean mountains in the Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. It lies exactly at the point where the Andean cordillera turns abruptly north-west, and continues towards southern Peru. After having run 3,000 miles due north from Tierra del Fuego.

This elbow and its low-lying hinterland is the meeting point of four very different geographical zones, the southern rim of the Amazona basin (with its humid tropical forest) the western edge of the brasilian shield (with its sub-tropical deciduous forest) limit of the temperate woodland ofh the Chaco and the very diverse subtropical and temparate forest of the Andean mountains themselves. It is not surprising then to find that the park contains eleven Holdridge Life Zones (the same as the whole of Costa Rica) from the warn humid forest of the low lands to the cactus deserts adn cloud forestof the uplands

Then, in the last section, you’ll descend, following the Elvira River and connecting to the Tres Cascadas Trail, which passes by the waterfalls near the restaurant.

CUMBRE Trail – Very Difficult (4 – 5 Hours)
This trail begins on the main access road and initially follows the Loro Trail. Then, you take a left turn where a steep and demanding 2-hour ascent begins. Other major attractions are the chances of observing the freshwater dolphins and Giant River Otters and maybe a jaguar. among many other mammals of the Amazon.

The number of birds that can be appreciated, according to our experience and knowledge, are in more number on this North Side of the park. But the number of species are much more in the south side of this park.

We offer different kind of itineraries or programs for visiting the north side of Noel Kempff. All trips start from Santa Cruz city and tours can be by land or by a small plane

The tour to Noel Kempff National Park Flor De Oro starts at 7:30 a.m. You will be picked up from your hotel or home by our personnel to be taken to the air field. There we will board a small single-engine air plane which will take us to Noel Kempff National Park north side. We will arrive to El Cafetal airfield in about 3 hours of flight. (We recommend you to use the toilette before boarding)

We will have the opportunity to appreciate from up-high the city of Santa Cruz. And after flying for the first 30 minutes towards the north-east we will be able to appreciate the devastation inflicted to the forest by the agriculture fields, meanly of Soy Beans and Sunflower. Later we will be flying on the town of Concepcion which is part of the Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitania

On the way to Noel Kempff National Park Flor De Oro, flying for some more time we start seeing how the exuberant green carpet get thicker, And soon we are flying on the virgin jungle of park

Some more time on the way and will start watching the awesome Caparu plateau. On our way to Flor De Oro in Noel Kempf National Park, flying on the plateau we can appreciate from the plane the impressing waved landscape and the different vegetation of this flat mountain while we get close to the waterfalls “Arcoiris” y “Ahlfeld”.

Once on of the Arcoiris waterfall we will fly on a flank to have better view of the waterfall, so pictures are easier to be taken. And in about two minutes we will be on the Anfeld, the we need go find the airfield near itenez/ Guapore river.

Soon we will be landing at Valle Itenez airfield, a little far from the waterfalls but the is the nearest one available and legally operable.

Soon after landing we should begin a beautiful trip navigating the Itenez river waters, for the first four hours approximately, sometimes depending on season is possible to find the awesome floating plant Victoria Boliviana.

Later we will meet Pauserna River. Pauserna is a smaller river coming out of the park into Itenez river. Because the arrival to the airfield sometimes is sometimes delayed due to whether conditions, the group may have to spend the first night in camping at a riverbank next to the park rangers’ boat. It is about 3 hours before Ahfeld Camp. At this point we also need to do some paper work to get access to the waterfalls.

Dinner and overnight at this point where Itenez and Pausernan river meet.

2nd Day

Early in the morning we procceed our journey to Ahlfeld camp on Pauserna river.

We may have the opportunity of seeing and watch a great variety of birds like Kingfishers and different mammals such as the Capybaras and if we are lucky enough..It is even possible to spot some jaguar on the beaches of the river But we do not guarantee finding and watching any wild mammals

This will certainly turn our journey into an unforgettable experience. An experience which permits us to enjoy the infinite wonders of nature.

Arrival to Ahlfeld camp. Settle in in camping (camping gear is included). The place will be our sub-base camp for all our excursions today and tomorow.

After that we cross Pauserna river to start a short walk through a path parallel to the Pauserna River. The path is covered by a very relaxing canopy forest. This walk is approximately 30 minutes and goes towards a natural pool formed by this waterfall. Here we will have a special and spectacular view from the bottom We will also be able to take pictures from different angles. We will be able to enjoy these falls and take a swim but NOT to close to the falls.

We must take notice and respect all existing signs and indications of caution. We must be aware of the presence of Sting Rays in the water as well as the presence of other animals which are not very probable but surely possible.

Some times also is possible to enjoy another waterfall from which you can get some wonderful massages for the whole body.

If the conditions allow it, We could have an early boat ride to visit some new places near by or some trekking

At night it possible to have a trekking to try to see more wildlife.

Dinner and overnight in Ahfeld Camp.

3rd Day

After breakfast, we will set out on a path parallel to the Pauserna River towards the top part of the Ahfeldfalll. Here is where the waterfall begins. The view from here is more impressive.

Even though the view is not as extensive as the one from bottom it is some how creepy. CAUTION: do not get too close to the edges since the rocks are very SLIPPERY.

Following the same trail affter about 2.5 hours we should arrive at ArcoIris Waterfall view point

Total time hiking both ways is about 6 hours

This first part of the walk is 40 minutes, and we will stop to enjoy the place and surroundings for about 30 minutes.

After this point, we will keep on our way up to have a close look at Arcoiris Waterfall.

We keep getting further away from the camp-site on a path through different types of forests. The path will go slightly uphill towards the Arcoiris fall view point.

There are parts where the path turns narrow with a rocky wall on one side and an edge that falls several meters down to the Pauserna River… We must walk very carefully. We will keep going upward on the path through the jungle whose vegetation keeps changing.

At the top we reach Caparú Plateau where the forest’s vegetation is already low. We walk for approximately 30 more minutes on the plateau until we get to the point where we get a magnificent view of Arcoiris Falls. It is here where we stop for refreshments and lunch sandwiches.

Meanwhile we watch in this immense place, the action of the water that falling down creates a notable evaporation of liquids, part of the natural cycle which must be watched, appreciated and meditated upon.

Depending on the rain season, some streams become rivers which turn into others impressive waterfalls; smaller but yet closer and more accessible to the visitor who may swim and get massaged by the fall of its water.

Sometimes Arcoiris Fall may be visited from below. Though. this is not very frequent. The visits to the bottom of Arcoiris depends largely on the CONDITIONS of the Pauserna River and availability of time.

The Pauserna River must be crossed swimming with much caution with the animals of the place as well as caution with the “tenant” residing on the bottom part of the Arcoiris Falls who is the Anaconda “Iris”!!!!!!! She has been spotted on several occasions from the top of the plateau (with binoculars) basking in the sun on the rocks

After we are done appreciating the watefall and its surroundings. We should return to the Ahlfeld Camp-site to rest and have dinner.

4th Day

After breakfast, to be more in tune with the wildlife’s movements, have more possibilities of observing some mammals or birds that we have not yet seen and to arrive on time to the airfield to fly back to Santa Cruz, we should start the trip back to the airfield.

The return trip is somewhat shorter than the original trip.

On the way back to the community we may have the time to stop to have one more chance to observe some more wildlife

Also we may stop at a community on riverbanks to have a tipical lunch

Once in the community we should stay overnight at the hostel because it is going to be no enough daylight to fly to the city of Santa Cruz.

Dinner and overnight in the community near the airfield

5th Day

After breakfast we should board the small plane to return to Santa Cruz city

we should use the restrooms before boarding the small plane.

Once in the city we drive you to your place.

End of this visit of Noel Kempff National Park Flor De Oro

Itineraries By plane

Noel Kempff National Park Los Fierros

Meseta Caparu Plateau
Noel Kempff National Park Los Fierros
Excursion from Santa Cruz City
1st Day

At 08:00 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel or residence to commence this Noel Kempff National Park Los Fierros, Tour.

The transfer is to ia private airfield or to a small airport where we will board a single-engine airplane, which will fly us to the Southern side of the Noel Kempf Mercado Park.

It is advisable to make use of the hygienic installations before the commencement of this Noel Kempf tours and boarding the airplane.

At the beginning of the two-hour flight, in these Noel Kempf Tours, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the view of the city of Santa Cruz from the air, and after the first 40 minutes, we will be able to notice the devastation caused by the agriculture on the Northeastern areas, mostly for the plantations of soy and sunflower.

After the first hour of flight, we will be above the town of Concepción, which is part of the Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitania.

In 30 more minutes of flight, we will notice how the exuberant green mantle becomes denser.

We will be landing inside Noel Kempf Mercado National park at “Refugio Huanchaca” after approximately 2 hours of flight.

After a short relaxing at Refugio Huanchaca time we get ready to departure in a vehicle or on horses towards Caparu plateau.

The point that we plan to go on a vehicle is about 27 Kilometres away from Refugio Hanchaca lodge. At this point is where the road get into the forest and we should continue on foot.

Once start the trip by land leaving Refugio, The first 5 kilometres crosses a part of forest. And then for about 22 kilometres it goes on a land of pampas.

These pampas get overflowed on raining seasons. But during dry season the pampas very dried and easily may get on fire

The heat in this area is very high and the temperature gets to about 40 centigrade.

In dry season during any trips it is necessary to carry enough water. Because it may be hard to find it down the road,

Once we get to the end of the road in las pampas we should start hiking. This first hike should be done for about 10 kms or to the first or second stream with water.

Once in the right place we set up the tent

During this walk there are some parts with big chances of watching some mammals like Giant Armadillo

Close by this camping site and after a walk at night of about 30 minutes we may find glowing termites during the months of October or November.

Some months of the year the activity of moths is very annoying

Overnight in the forest in tents

2nd Day
After breafast we should continue trekking for approximately 2 hours to hike to the bottom of the plateau. During this hike, we need to have our senses alert in order to listen to, smell or see interesting particularities of this jungle.

We also need to pay attention to the gradual change from forest of high trees to very low vegetation. The visitors must beware of the thorns and tips of the branches in many sections of the paths within the park.

Once we reach the bottom of the plateau, if it is hot or still it is not evening we should not be in this place longer than thirty minutes. The ideal time to arrive at this place known as “Las Lajas” is in the dusk, because during the day and with the presence of people, very annoying bees (especially for the eyes) begin to arrive at the place.

But this time we are only resting in Las Lajas for about 20 minutes

Depending on the time of arrival to Las Lajas and on the conditions that we are, we should continue hikking on a steep trail to the top of Caparu plateau.

The ascent to the plateau is a rustic footpath in zigzag, steep and almost without any vegetation to cover us from the sun, which is why the conditions of the ascent can be unfriendly. Especially if there is not enough wind and the sun is strong. In any case, it is necessary to be in good physical condition for this part of the trip.

But as we climb the view of the forest of the park becomes wider and the immense “Chaplin” lake can be seen amidst the exuberant vegetation.

Likewise, depending on the time of ascent, we will have the opportunity to see the Blue-and-Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) sometimes flying at a lower height from us.

Once on top of the plateau, we will have a hike of about one hour in order to better appreciate the view of the waved green landscape spotted with virgin forest, rivers, streams and palm trees.

If we are lucky enough, we will be able to see deers, or even the macaws nesting in palms that are about 30 minutes away from the edge of the plateau.Hiking to others edges of the plateau caparucú, nearby we can appreciate different views of green forest around us

You can program a longer visit to the plateau, because after one hour and a half hiking on top of it is possible to reach the a incredible jungle, and a comping spot next to a beautiful stream

In this place there greater chances of to see some mammals. From this point, that used to be or still is the camping site on top of the plateau. It was possible to do some trekking in the pampas for about 40 minute to a beautiful natural pool.

on the way to this pool we will see a burned motorcycle

and a short distance away we also can see parts of a small wreckage air plane.

Both the motorcycle and the airplane used to belong to a drug factory installed in forest nearby where still is possible to see some remains of it.

A well-known bolivian conservationists named Noel Kempf Mercado was killed in the airfield of one of these factories on top of Caparuch plateau when his small plane landed with a team of nature researchers. It happened the 5th of September of 1986.

esides of Noel kempf Mercado also were killed at the same time, Juan Cochamanidis, Franklin Parada Auclos. Vicente Castelló, a Spaniard scientist, was the only survivor.

Getting back on our itinerary. And because this program does not include more days and after about one or one hour and a half on top of caparuch, we should return by the same footpath. On the way down hill we must take care of loosen stones.

We arrive at Las Lajas This is a camping spot next to a small stream. It located in the bottom of the Plateau

Overnight in Las Lajas

3rd Day – Noel Kempff National Park Los Fierros

Early in the morning breakfast. Then we should keep hiking to the place where we left the vehicle to return to Refugio Huanchaca

The hiking distance of today to the vehicle is approximately 12 or 15 kilometers.

We should be arriving to Refugio Huanchaca at end of the day

Dinner and overnight in Refugio Huanchaca

4th Day

Early in the morning we can take a boat ride on Paragua river to try to see some birds, yacares and giant river otters

After lunch we have to fly back to the City of Santa Cruz.

Once we arrive in the city a vehicle will take you to your hotel

The heat in this area is very high and the temperature may gets to 43 centigrade grades

In dry season, during It is necessary to carry plenty of water. Because it may be hard to find it in long distances

After 29 kilometers the road leave las pampas behind to enter the jungle for about 3 kilometers to pass by Los Fierros. Be aware that sometimes we may have to walk without a path

In these last 3 kilometers to Los Fierros is possible to find many logs blocking the road or almost no road.. And also there is an old bridge in not good conditions. Also about the last 10 kms in las pampas may be cover with vegetation

Due to these reasons it may be a better idea to leave the vehicle 10 or more kms away from Los Fierros.

Florida Community – Los Fierros Caparu Plateau
Los Fierros Air plane Transportation to Florida Airfield
Noel Kempff National Park Los Fierros
Noel Kempff Mercado National Park – Southern Side
From the city of Santa Cruz
Noel Kempf Tours
1st Day

At 08:00 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel or residence in order to take you to a small air-plane runway or airport where we will board a small single-engine air plane, which will fly us to the Southern side of the Noel Kempff Mercado Park. It is advisable to make use of the hygienic installations before boarding the air plane.

We will land at “Los Fierros” or at Florida runway after approximately 2 hours of flight. It will depend mainly on the conditions of the airfield of Los Fierros

At the beginning of the two-hour flight, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the view of the city of Santa Cruz from the air, and after the first 40 minutes, we will be able to notice the devastation caused by the agriculture on the Northeastern areas, mostly for the plantations of soy and sunflower.

After the first 30 minutes of flight, we will be above the town of Concepción, which is part of the Jesuitical Missions of the Chiquitania.

After other 30 minutes of flight, we will notice how the exuberant green mantle becomes denser, and after 60 minutes, we will be above the virgin jungle of the park.

Once we are above the park, we will head towards the “El Encanto” (The Enchantment) waterfall, over which we will fly in order to take photographs of it from different angles in order to obtain better pictures; then we will fly at a lower altitude over the prairies of the impressive landscape of the “Meseta” (Plateau) . This is about 7 minutes before landing.

After landing, either in Los Fierros or in Florida, a 4WD vehicle will be waiting for us by the landing strip, along with the driver and/or the Tour-Coordinator in order to proceed with this excursion. After lunch we will continue this adventure on the ground.

If we land in the run way of Los Fierros we will continue on the vehicle directly to El Encanto waterfall or to Caparu plateau. It will depend on the weather and/or other access conditions and also on the available time on that day.

If we have had to land in the run way of the community of Florida, then we have to go through the park ranger site to register our names and then we have to cross the Paragua river on a flat boat and drive about 2 hours or more (it depends on the conditions of the path) in order to reach Los Fierros.

Florida is a nice village surrounded by the forest by an oxbow of Paragua River. It has nearly 20 families or less because the population is decreasing due to the immigration of the youth people to San Ignacio or to Santa Cruz.

From Los Fierros, if we decide to visit the “El Encanto” cascade first, the next campsite is about 35 Kilometers (21.7 Miles) away, it is approximately two hours by vehicle from the “Los Fierros” cabins or run way. We might be able to arrive with the vehicle to this campsite known as El Encanto Camp, or we might have to walk a few (10) Kilometers in order to arrive at this point. The exact distance we might have to walk is unknown. It is depending on the conditions of the road, bridges and/or fallen trees in the way. Anyways, if the path is in optimum conditions, the vehicle will only be able to arrive at the El Encanto Camp, which is 5 Kilometers (3 Miles) away from the cascade.

During the trip, either by vehicle or hiking the trails, we must keep our ears in alert in order to listen to the sounds of the forest and have more possibilities of observing the wildlife, like Macaws, monkeys or larger mammals such as the Tapir, and if we are very lucky we may even see a Jaguar.

Once we are in El Encanto Camp, we can continue our walk to the waterfall on this first day, or we may have to do this on the next day, this will depend on the available time for this part of the excursion.

We will spend the night at the El Encanto Camp or at Los Fierros, depending on the road and bridges conditions as said before.

2nd Day

Wherever we have slept the night before, we will arise very early in the morning to have breakfast. If we had already visited the cascade on the previous day, we will head directly to the “Caparú” plateau. Again the vehicle will go as far as possible, and this depends one more time on the conditions of the bridges and the trees fallen in the way, although it is usually possible to drive until the end of the vehicle´s road, and in this case we will only walk for two hours until the base of the plateau.

During this hike, we must keep our senses in alert to be able to hear, smell or see the interesting particularities of this place. We also need to pay a lot of attention to the gradual change from the jungle of high trees to lower vegetation. After the two-hour hike, we will arrive at “Las Lajas”, where we will take a brief rest, since in the daytime, after a short permanence of people in this place, some tiny bees, although very annoying ones (especially for the eyes), start to arrive.

After our hike towards the base of the mesa, the tough ascent to the top of the plateau starts. The difficulty of this will depend on the sunlight and heat at the moment of the ascent. In any case, it is necessary to have a good physical condition. Those who do not feel well to continue can stay in a small brook in this place, resting while waiting for an animal to come.

During the ascent to the top, the view of the jungle below in the prairie becomes wider, enabling us to see the famous and enormous “Chaplin” lake among the exuberant vegetation. It is also possible to observe birds such as the Macaws, flying below our level.

Once at the top of the plateau, we will have a one-hour hike enjoying the wavy green panorama spotted with virgin jungle, brooks and palm trees, and if we are lucky enough, we will be able to see some deer and/or Yellow-and-Blue Macaws (Ara ararauna). They nest in some palm trees located 30 minutes away from the trail that leads to the top of the plateau.

After this experience, we will start our descent to the base of the plateau and to the vehicle. Depending on the unfolding of the program so far and the arrangements previously made in the offices of Amboró Tours in Santa Cruz….

At night there is a possibility of a short nocturnal Safari with lanterns.

Spend the night at the base of the mesa or at Los Fierros.

3rd Day

In case we wake up near Los Fierros, we will leave at 05:00 on the vehicle with the spot- light in order to see some more of the wildlife in the Noel Kempff Park. We can also use this day to visit the El Encanto cascade, in case we did not have enough time to have visited it on the first day.

This day is very necessary, if we are to climb the plateau in two days; that is, walking to the base of the plateau (Las Lajas) in the afternoon to spend the night there in tents, and early in the morning on the next day, hike to the top. The activities of this third day will depend on how fast the itinerary was performed in the previous two days.

Depending on where we spend the night, the night of the third day can also be used to drive the vehicle with its halogen lights in the surroundings of Los Fierros, looking for animals. We can also use this night for a nocturnal hike with flashlights on open trails.

4th Day

Very early in the morning, before sunrise and breakfast, we will take a short hike or go in the vehicle by the main path that leads to the Paraguá River. After lunch, we will leave this wonderful park in order to board the single-engine airplane that will fly us back to Santa Cruz, where a vehicle will be waiting for us to take us to our respective places.

End of our Noel Kempf Tours service. Thanks.

Los Fierros – Florida Caparu Plateau By Land
From the city of Santa Cruz
“Los Fierros” By Land

1st Day

Noel Kempff National Park Los Fierros tour.

At 09:00 hours we will start the first part of our trip to the park, aboard a private vehicle heading to the town of Santa Rosa de la Roca, located at 378 kilometers away (234.87 miles).

This trip will be done on a paved road until the town of Santa Rosa De La Roca, passing by several towns and villages of migrants people from the high lands of Bolivia and Mennonites colonies. This trip is crossing an agricultural area, which grows soybean, sunflower, and several types of other grains. There, we can also realize the relentless advance of the agricultural frontier from 30 Kilometers (48.38 Miles) off Santa Cruz.

After Concepcion it is 79 kilometres to Santa Rosa. The trip to Santa Rosa de la Roca takes approximately 5 hours.

After leaving the City of Santa Cruz and in about 3 hours on the road we may stop in San Javier for 30 minutes. San Javier is a town on 542 meters on sea level. Most of its people have indigenous background. It was founded in the year 1691 by the Jesuits.

Dinner and over night in Santa Rosa de La Roca

2nd Day

Around 09:00 a.m. we will leave the town of Santa Rosa de la Roca, At the previous night the coordinator of tour would have to confirmed to you the exact time of departure.

This trip will be in a 4WD vehicle and will last approximately 6 (or more) hours until the community of Florida located on the border of Noel Kempff Mercado National Park.

UNESCO declared this magnificent park as a patrimony of the humanity in the year 2000.

In the trip from Santa Rosa de la Roca to this village, we will have the opportunity to live a different trip, perhaps to which most of those attracted to parks are accustomed to, since the roads are unpaved and very dusty in the dry season. During the raining season this road is in some parts very muddy and sometimes it presents great difficulties to be transited by vehicles.

Also we may find fallen trees on the way or trailers trucks stuck in the mud of the road.

On raining season is normal to find some paddles in the middle of the road

We will stop on the way a few minutes for pictures or others reasons. But not longer than approximately 20 minutes, because we can fall prey to an amount of bees that becomes unbearable and of course the mosquitoes will be inevitable guests at night.

As we approach the park, the vegetation becomes greener and the forests improve; therefore, the opportunities to encounter wild life also increase. Although the depredation by timber companies in areas of forest concessions is quite noticeable, with great grief for those of us who appreciate nature without human destruction.

We will arrive at the village of Florida at the end of the day or in the evening.

This village is a nice place surrounded by forest and by a oxbow of the Paragua River. It has nearly 20 families or less. The population is decreasing due to the immigration of the youth people to San Ignacio or to Santa Cruz.

The service of pipe water at home is not yet installed. The huts that serve as lodging have palm or grass as roof.

The lodgings places have toilet, but the water system does not work yet, so it is necessary use a bucket with water to flush toilets. The showers still does not work.

But the oxbow lake next to the community although with some crocodiles, caimans and piranhas it is the place where people of the community wash their clothes and take a bath, so we can do the same.

In Florida you may find brasilian and bolivian beer to buy, but it is very hard if not impossible to find some things from outside to eat or for personal use.

Supper and spend the night in the village.

3irdDay

After breakfast, we will visit the park ranger site to register our names. Later, we will head towards the crossing point to get on he other side of the Paragua river which is the natural border of the park.

Some time ago we used to operate a big flat boat to get the vehicle across the river. Nowadays this flat boat is not working. So it is necessary to get something else to cross the river.

Once on the other side of the river we will be inside the territory of Noel Kempf National park. We will then continue our trip by foot or by motorcycles, On the path there are some wooden bridges in very bad conditions, although some or most of them were repaired in august 2009.

when we are walking on the bridges we have to be very care full with the broken parts of it.

The last excursions to the inside of the park in vehicles was about in the year 2013. And we had to carry our own wood to fix the old bridges

During this walk there are some parts with big chances of watching some mammals like river otters and others

This trail with fallen trees blocking the way used to be the only road for vehicles that some years ago was opened.

Nowadays the best is to enter the park on foot. It is a long hike from the border of the park to Los Fierros.

Los Fierros cabins are some 35 km away from the border of the park. This roads is abandoned and the vegetation on both sides has closed the way in some parts.

the visitors must beware of the thorns and tips of the branches in many sections of the paths within the park.

During this hiking it is also very probable to find some animals crossing or walking the path; these animals can be peccaries, coatis, “tayras” or deers

It was usual to see a jaguar or a puma, on this road they like to freshen up by lying on the way.

The turkeys and macaws or “guacamayos” are other animals that we will have the opportunity to see in these paths through the park.

About 2 kilometres before reaching Los Fierros Cabins we get to what used to be the airfield of Los Fierros. Amboro Tours used to clean up this airfield every year to have it operable.

Once in the camping site of Los Fierros cabins we we should prepare or find a place where to set up the tents.

The cabins are useless, them are full of tiny ants that may get into your tents really easy depending on the the tent.

Amboro Tours recommends to bring about half litre of diesel so you are able to set up your tent on the ceramic of the cabins.

The hiking from Paragua River to Los Fierros may take us the whole day and part of the night.

Be aware that the roof of the cabins may fall down any time. Also be aware of wasps nets, they love to live in some parts of this old cabins

There is a stream about 800 meters from Los Fierros but to access thies stream it is necessary to open the path with machetes Dinner and overnight in Los Fierros

4th Day

After breakfast we have to get ready to keep hiking or if we have a motorcycle we should get on the bikes to keep going on towards the Caparu (caparuch) Plateau.

Around Los Fierros and in most places in this part of the park there are thousands of bees on activity as soon as the the day warm up

From Los Fierros Caparau plateau is some 20 kilometers away crossing the seasonal overflowed pampas

The times when a vehicle could get to this part of the park the road was full of water on rain season

After the pampas the path gets us back into the forest for some times.

Nowadays the last five or more kilometers of this path should be full of vegetation blocking it.

This day we will get as far as we can on our way to Caparuch plateau. It is more likely that we would have to stay overnight by a stream Up to where the vehicles used to get.

Close by this camping site and after a walk at night of about 30 minutes in the path and in the forest at night we can find this glowing termites during the months of October or November. They do this to attract other insect.

During some months of the year the activity of moths is very annoying

Assuming that we stay overnight by this stream.

5th Day

From this point it takes approximately 2 hours to hike to the base of the plateau.

During this hike, we need to have our senses alert in order to listen to, smell or see interesting particularities of this jungle.

We also need to pay attention to the gradual change from forest of high trees to very low vegetation.

Once we reach the base of the plateau, if it is hot or still it is not evening we should not be in this place longer than thirty minutes.

The ideal time to arrive at this place known as “Las Lajas” is in the dusk, because during the day and with the presence of people, very annoying bees (especially for the eyes) begin to arrive at the place.

But this time we are only resting in Las Lajas for about 20 minutes

Depending on the time of arrival to Las Lajas and on the conditions that we are, we will climb the plateau on this day or we will leave it for the following day early in the morning.

After the rest we proceed on our hiking to caparuch plateau

The ascent to the plateau is a rustic footpath in zigzag, steep and almost without any vegetation to cover us from the sun, which is why the conditions of the ascent can be unfriendly,

Especially if there is not enough wind and the sun is strong. In any case, it is necessary to be in good physical condition for this part of the trip,

Once on top of the plateau, we will have a hike of about one hour in order to appreciate the view of the waved green landscape

spotted with virgin forest, water streams and palm tree.

If we are lucky enough, we will be able to see deer, or even the macaws nesting in palms that are about 30 minutes away from the edge of the plateau.

Hiking to others edges of the plateau caparuch, near by we can appreciate different views of green forest around us

You can program a longer visit to the plateau, because after one hour and a half hiking on top of the plateau is possible to get the a part of the plateau covered with a beautiful jungle and to a place where Amboro Tours used to set up the tents next to a nice stream

In this place is possible to see monkeys and others mammals.

From this point, that used to be or still is the camping site on top of the plateau. It was possible to do some trekking in the pampas for about 40 minute to a beautiful natural pool.

on the way to this pool we will see a burned motorcycle and a short distance away we also can see parts of a small crashed airplane.

Both the motorcycle and the airplane used to belong to a drug factory installed in forest near by where still is possible to see some remains of it.

A well known bolivian conservationists named Noel Kempf Mercado was killed in the airfield of one of these factories on top of Caparuch plateau when his small plane landed with a team of nature researchers. It happened the 5th of September of 1986.

Besides of Noel kempf Mercado also were killed at the same time, Juan Cochamanidis, Franklin Parada Auclos. Vicente Castelló, a Spaniard scientist, was the only survivor.

Getting back on our itinerary and because this program does not include more days and after about one or one hour and a half on top of caparuch, we should return by the same footpath. On the way down hill we must take care of loosen stones.

We arrive at Las Lajas and proceed towards Los Fierros.

During the hikings we always have big chances of watchin some exotict birds

And bing or small groups o spider monkeys

overnight some where next to a steam

6th Day

This way is entirely to hike to Los Fierros.

The hiking distance of today is approximately 20 kilometers.

One in Los Fierros we can take a bath in the stream near by.

Until the year 2010 (approximately) the road for vehicles to El Encanto Waterfall was open or was possible to get to the end of the road for vehicle with some difficulties.

From Los Fierros it is about 25 kilometers El Encanato waterfall.

On this road we almost always had to chop many logs fallen on the way specially on raining season or because in months nobody else wanted to mess with this troubles

At the end of the road for vehicles there used to be a small hut where we used to set up the tents.

From this point we had to do some trekking of 5 kilometers to reach the waterfall

On the way we had to cross the same steam twice, some times on raining season it was a bit hard but beautiful

Dinner and overnight in Los Fierros

7th Day

After breakfast in Los Fierros, we should start hiking to Florida Community. Florida is about 38 kilometers away from Los Fierros.

On this day at about 5::00 some one from Florida is supposed to come for us with a boat and motorcycles to help us to get to Florida

Dinner and overnight in Florida

8th Day

After breakfast we should leave Florida. There are two roads to take, We should decide for the best option depending on the conditions of the road

After about 8 hours of driving we may get to a town called Concepcion.

Dinner and overnight in Concepcion

9th day

After breakfast we return to the ciy of Santa Cruz.

Once in the city we take to your hotel

It is here where this excursion with Amboró Tours finishes.

End of Noel Kempff National Park Los Fierros tour.

Organized Kaa Iya

National Park Jaguar Tours

More than 10 years ago organized tours at Kaa Iya N. park were nonexistent, but sooner or later it was going to be a reality. The sooner the better because all national park o natural reserves have enormous threats specially in Bolivia. Those years it was not easy to convince people in charge of the park to open their minds to this need..But conservationists people with a wide view in Amboro Tours made it happen. From this link you can access to the updated and Synthesized itineraris

Our Kaa Iya Tours are trips to different entrances in this unique national park. Most of the tours used to be to ”Tucavaca” entrance but due to some necessary changes in our itineraries now we have other options to visit the park.

Kaa Iya National Park Jaguar Tours

This reserve is located in Bolivia, is renowned for its rich and diverse wildlife, with a particular focus on the presence of the jaguar (Panthera onca), the largest feline species in the Americas and a symbol of the region’s wilderness.

Within the rugged landscapes of Kaa Iya, jaguars thrive in habitats ranging from expansive plains to thorny forests typical of the Bolivian Chaco.

These magnificent predators play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance as apex predators, regulating prey populations and shaping the dynamics of the park’s ecosystem. The park’s conservation efforts are centered around protecting the jaguar population, which faces threats such as habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. Beyond jaguars, Kaa Iya is also home to a variety of other iconic species including pumas, tapirs, ocelots, and peccaries, showcasing the park’s importance as a biodiversity hotspot in South America. Please may sure you take with your original passport or your country´s I.D. if your country is a member of the MERCOSUR agreement.

The road to Tucavaca is asphalted until the population of San Jose de Chiquitos, which is about 265 km from Santa Cruz and the rest of the 362 kms is on a off road.

After leaving the city of Santa Cruz by car you can see large areas of crops mostly soybean and sunflower.

This area is known as the Eastern Lowlands of Santa Cruz. The ground in this area is suitable for agriculture.

After about 2 hours driving you can appreciate from the highway, during a good part of this first journey, the Mennonite colonies exist in large numbers on both sides of the road.

The Mennonites are an ethnic group that is dedicated to to agriculture and they came and still are coming to Santa Cruz from different countries such as Canada, Mexico and Paraguay.

Among these groups of people there are colonies of Mennonites with the most stringent internal rules. They do not allow their members to use electricity. Either they are not allow to use tractors with pneumatic. So they have to be replaced the pneumatic by iron rims adapted by themselves.

There are also Mennonites colonies with internal rules much more flexible but they all live in exclusive communities for Mennonites

During this journey, you can see on the road a variety of wild mammals lifeless beaten by cars. The type of animal more frequently seen dead on the highway are foxes, ant eaters, (Tamandua tetadractyla) armadillos, monkeys and even some times a tigrillo (Leopardus wiedii). Besides domestic ones

It is estimated to arrive at the first part of the journey which is San Jose de Chiquitos at approximately 11:00 hours.

San Jose de Chiquitos´ church has been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos.

The Jesuits arrived in the area of “Chiquitania” (a term imposed by the Jesuits) on December 31, 1691.

San Jose de Chiquitos was founded in 1696. In 1767 the Jesuits were expelled and taken prisoner by soldiers under the command of the Spanish crown.

After San Jose de Chiquitos we still have to drive to Tucavaca. Three hours or 97 kilometers more down on off road. Almost all this road appears to be stable throughout the year, although in some parts the land is prone to erosion and other parts may become muddy with rain

During the first 15 minutes this road goes by the city´s park “Santa Cruz La Vieja”. And then it is uphill for a while.

In some high points of the road you can see the green of the forest environment and the “Chiquitano” forest with a panoramic view of the town of San Jose de Chiquitos.

After 3 hours of driving on up down hills and some flat parts all surrounded  by a green low forest typical of this part of Santa Cruz.

During this drive we have some chances of watching some wildlife.

As we approached Kaa Iya park and we start to cross the protection gates, and it is when the possibilities for wildlife viewing are greater.

From the first locked gate to Tucabaca Park Rangers site is about 20 minutes going in a low pace. On this road also there are possibilities to watch some mammals

From the first locked gate to Tucabaca Park Rangers site is about 20 minutes going in a low pace. On this road also there are possibilities to watch some mammals

We estimate to reach, the Camp of Tucavaca in Kaa Iya park, at about 16:00 hours

Once in the camp of the park ranger´s we have to give them the entry permission that we brought from Santa Cruz.

After arrival we are accommodated in shelters built  by the community with the support from an NGO. Or we can set up  the tents some where near the park rangers base.

Later we  start walking or we go by car to the road that runs parallel to the pipeline.

This is some places where you have more opportunities to see the jaguar and others big mammals especially during the warm days, since they like  places where the wind flows more easily and cools the hot atmosphere of this part of the Chaco forest.

Some mammals like to lick the mud  where the water from a rain gather in some places on the road parallel to the pipeline

During the walk or drive it may get dark so it  is necessary to take a good flashlight and insect protection.

Although we recommend you to try to use more clothes protections rather than odour repellents.

Dinner and overnight would be close to the park ranger´s place. Or somewhere in the forest of the park

2nd Day

Very early in the morning we bound for the city of Santa Cruz.

Breakfast would be before or after starting the trip

Getting out of the park boundaries  we still have big chances of watching a  Jaguar, Tapires or deers.

It Is estimated to be back in the city of Santa Cruz at 18:00 hours.

Once we return to the city to leave it in your hotel

Later this afternoon we start a 2 / 3 hours trekking or we go by car to the road that runs parallel to the pipeline.

This first day we will try find traces of a jaguar, that way we should know better where to look for it the next days. In some places we have more opportunities to see jaguars and others big mammals, especially during the warm days, since they like places where the wind flows more easily and cools the hot atmosphere of this part of the Chaco forest.

At night we also should go out riding the vehicle o walking to look for wildlife big cats, tapirs or any other mammals

You should always keep with you enough water, a torch, a hat and insect protection.

Although we recommend you to try to use more clothes protections rather than odour repellents.

Dinner and overnight would be close to the park ranger´s place. Or somewhere in the forest of the park

2nd Day – KKaa Iya National Park Jaguar Tours

We start at 5H or 4H in the morning riding in the vehicle or trekking, this will depend on the activities we had the night before. We start the day before sunrise, this in order to have a better chances of observing mammals

The area chosen to go today will depend on the results of the day before. In this part of Kaa Iya National park there are o only two existing roads. One which runs parallels to the gas pipeline and the other that is the one we used to get in the park

On the way we will have great opportunities to see some wildlife, but never guarantee the observation of any animal.

Also is possible go have a short trekking through the virgin forest to one of the many small “Lagunas” This walk may takes about 20 minutes one way. These little reserve of water are in dry season a excellent place to find wildlife.

At night we have another excursion in the park to have more chances of finding wildlife.

Dinner and overnight in Tucavaca

3rd Day – Kaa Iya National Park Jaguar Tours

The Bolivian Pantanal

with Puerto Bush

The bolivian pantanal with Puerto Bush tours. The Pantanal is a floodplain of 140,000 km² where more than 80 species of mammals, 650 species of birds, 263 species of fish, and 50 species of reptiles can be found. The Paraguay River is the backbone of the Pantanal, where all the widely dispersed waters of the Pantanal slowly flow. These lands have very little slope, so their drainage capacity is very low.

The landscapes are flat and expansive with great color and beauty. Most tours to the Pantanal-Puerto Bush are conducted from the city of Santa Cruz. Amboro Tours can also offer another destination in the Bolivian Pantanal where the Hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) can be closely observed.

When the tour or the itineraries offered by Amboro Tours begin in the city of Santa Cruz, they may include several other destinations along the same route, such as the Jesuit missions of San Jose and Santiago de Chiquitos, or other tourist destinations like Chochis, the Tucavaca Valley, and Aguas Calientes.

The latter is a river with white sand and hot springs with healing properties. Returning to the Bolivian Pantanal, the Otuquis National Park is the same Pantanal along the route from Puerto Suarez to Puerto Bush. This tour could also include the Tres Gigantes Biological Station on the Paraguayan side or the town of Bahia Negra in Paraguay to combine the Pantanal with ethnic tourism by visiting indigenous communities in Bahia Negra.

During water tours in boats with outboard motors or rowing boats, the chances of observing wildlife increase. Among the most common inhabitants are the Yacare caiman (Caiman yacare), the Anaconda (Eunectes notaeus), and the giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis). However, wildlife observation depends on several factors, such as the time of year.

Bolivia / Paraguay Pantanal Route; San Jose de Chiq. - Chochis - Santiago de Chiq. - Aguas Calientes

Starting at the city of Santa Cruz.It is possible to visit the bolivian and paraguayan parts of this wetland from the city of Santa Cruz or from the town of Puerto Suarez. But so far in Puerto Suarez Amboro Tours does not have an office Therefore all the arrangements has to be done with a tour company of the city of Santa Cruz or Online.

Amboro Tours offers the Pantanal Route from the city of Santa Cruz; – San Jose de Chiquitos – Valle de Tucavaca – Chochis – Aguas Calientes. Ones in Puerto Suares the route includes the Bolivian and Paraguayan Pantanal. Including Puerto Bush, Rio Paraguay and Rio Negro and Tres Gigantes biological station in Paraguay. The bolivian pantanal with Puerto Bush

Puerto Suarez Tres Gigantes
From The town of Puerto Suarez
1st Day

The bolivian pantanal with Puerto Bush and others destinations can be visited during a tour in a vehicle starting at your hotel in the town of Puerto Suarez or Puerto Quijarro early in the morning. The exact time we will let you know once we confirm our services. The final destination of this first day will be the Biological Station Tres Gigantes on Rio Negro in Paraguay across from Otuquis National park of Bolivia

This trip is on a dirt road that passes by one of the largest iron reserves in the world. This place is known as “El Mutun”.

Also in this first part of the road is common to observe Toco Tucans (Ramphastos toco) among others birds.

Later on the road we will cross the military controls gates and also the control gate of Otuquis National park

After about 50 Km from Puerto Suarez on the road to Puerto Bush, we will be right in the middle of the south side of bolivian Pantanal.

Our destination by car today is Puerto Bush. It is located 140 km from Puerto Suarez and it is where the this road ends when it reaches Paraguay river. This dirt road is the only access, when it has water, to crosses this part of the bolivian pantanal to reach Paraguay River.

On both the sides of this road usually there is a immense marshland with its pampas and with its typical vegetation and environmental Pantanala’s characteristics. Here we have great possibilities to see many birds and mammals, or anacondas. We will stop as required.

After two, or four hours (140 km) This can be a slow trip because we will be stopping for pictures or just to observe the fauna.

Once we reach the point where the road to vehicles ends, we will be arriving at Puerto Bush where the Bolivian Navy has a military base as well the people of Otuquis National park on the banks of the river called Paraguay

In Puerto Bush we embark on a small motor boat bound for Tres Gigantes Biological Station located on banks of Rio Negro.

This journey on the boat takes about one hour. The first part of this trip will be on Rio Paraguay and the last part will be on Negro River

Arrival and accommodation in Tres Gigantes Biological Station Lodge. Some night walk in the trails of Tres Gigntes is possible to try to see some mammals.

Dinner and overnight in Biological Station Tres Gigantes

2nd Day. The bolivian pantanal with Puerto Bush

Before breakfast, we will have a walk in the trail of Tres Gigantes. This can last one or two hours.

Also is possible to use the kayaks (two available) for some rides on Rio Negro.

In Rio Negro is possible to fish Pirañas and it is a place of Yacares

Also in Tres Gigantes or in the bolivian Pantanal there are great possibilities of observing jaguars (Panthera onca), puma (Puma concolor).

The giant armadillo (Pridontes maximus), Anta (Tapirus terrestris),and giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) or the giant ant eater Myrmecophaga tridactyla are some times easy to watch

For visitor with more adventure spirit is possible to cross rio Negro to have some walks in Otuquis National park in the bolivian side. But this would require to be organized ahead of time

One night in tents in the forest of Otuquis National park could be also possible. But this has to be coordinated with enough time also because we would need a legal authorization for it

Dinner and overnight in Biological Station Tres Gigantes

3er Day. The bolivian pantanal with Puerto Bush

Early after breakfast we may have the time for another short walk in the trails of Tres Gigantes.

After this we should start the trip back to Puerto Bush in a motor boat. First we have to go on Rio Negro and then o Rio Paraguay to arrive to Puerto Bush.

Once in Puerto Bush we should get ready to get on the vehicle to get back to Puerto Suarez. During this day we will be also enjoying the Pantanal, stopping for pictures or just to observe some more wild life. This last day we may have lunch some where on the road

Be aware that during the dry season some parts of the Pantanal may get on fire

We will be arriving at Puerto Suarez about 18:00 hours

End of the tour to the bolivian pantanal with Puerto Bush and other places in the Pantanal
